The OREA Flow Regulators

Give you a new way to fine-tune your brew without changing your workflow. Instead of simply brewing faster or slower, each Regulator is designed with a specific maximum flow rate to provide more predictable contact time and extraction.

Whether you’re brewing highly processed coffees, ultra-light roasts, or more developed profiles, the Regulators help you dial in a cleaner, sweeter, and more balanced cup by matching the brewer’s flow to your coffee.

*Please note that the jar is not included in the Regulators Bundle.

Description

FLOW REGULATION

OREA has always been known for fast-flowing brewers. From the V2, to the V3, and the V4 FAST, the focus has always been on creating efficient drawdowns with consistent extractions.

With the OREA Regulators, the conversation shifts from speed to control.

Built around the same drainage philosophy as the V4 FAST base, each regulator maintains even support across the coffee bed while leaving generous space for water and air to move freely. This minimizes clogging, stalling, and unpredictable drawdowns. The difference is intentional.

Each Regulator has a defined maximum flow rate, allowing you to regulate contact time more predictably without relying on paper filters or changing your brewing technique.

WHY IT MATTERS

Coffee isn’t brewed the same anymore.

Processing methods continue to evolve, roast styles have become more diverse, and every coffee behaves differently in the brewer.

Rather than changing recipes dramatically from one coffee to another, the Regulators give you another variable to fine-tune extraction while keeping your workflow familiar.

Whether you’re brewing highly processed competition coffees, ultra-light Nordic roasts, or sweeter medium roasts, choosing the right Regulator helps you reach a more balanced cup with greater consistency.

DIFFERENT COFFEES, DIFFERENT NEEDS

Over the past few years, three major trends have shaped modern brewing.

1. Highly Processed Coffees

Thermal Shock, Co-Fermented, Advanced Process, and similar coffees are incredibly soluble and extract very easily.

A slower Regulator lets you grind coarser while maintaining the same brew time, helping reduce excessive fermentation character and keeping the cup clean and balanced.

2. Ultra-Light Roasts

Traditional washed coffees roasted very lightly often require more contact time to fully develop sweetness and clarity.

Using a slower Regulator increases contact time without forcing immersion, helping improve extraction while preserving transparency in the cup.

3. More Developed Roasts

Modern medium and darker roasts continue moving toward cleaner and sweeter profiles.

These coffees often taste better with coarser grind sizes, but grinding coarser usually shortens contact time.

The Regulators help maintain sufficient contact time while allowing those coarser settings, producing sweeter and more balanced brews.

IS SLOWER BETTER?

Not necessarily. A slower brew isn’t automatically a better brew.

Traditional “slow brewers” often become slow because they clog. Large exit holes don’t always mean fast flow, and small holes don’t always mean restricted performance. OREA’s drainage system remains highly efficient.

The Regulators simply limit the maximum output flow in a controlled and predictable way, allowing you to extend contact time without introducing unnecessary variables.

The result is consistency, not restriction.

WHY NOT JUST USE A DIFFERENT FILTER?

Changing paper filters changes more than flow.

Different papers also change filtration, body, clarity, and mouthfeel.

The Regulators control contact time through the brewer itself, allowing you to keep using your preferred filter while adjusting extraction in a more predictable way.

Paper still matters, but it shouldn’t be your primary tool for controlling brew time.

THINK OF THEM AS AN EXTRA BREWING TOOL

The Regulators don’t replace recipes.

They expand them. Instead of dramatically changing grind size or pouring technique every time you switch coffees, you can choose a flow profile that better suits the coffee you’re brewing.

The result is more predictable brews, fewer missed extractions, and a wider range of flavour possibilities.

IMMERSION READY

The #8 Regulator was designed to work seamlessly with the Hario Switch.

Its faster drainage makes it ideal for steep-and-release brewing, allowing the immersion phase to finish with a clean, efficient drawdown.

For brewers who enjoy hybrid brewing methods, it offers another level of control without compromising cup clarity.

REGULATOR COMPARISON

#2 Regulator – Dark Grey – The slowest maximum flow rate.

Ideal for coffees that benefit from longer contact time or coarser grinding while maintaining extraction.

#4 Regulator – Black – A balanced middle ground.

Suitable for a wide range of coffees and everyday brewing.

#8 Regulator – Orange – The fastest Regulator.

Compatible with the Hario Switch and designed for hybrid immersion brewing with quick, clean drawdowns.

WHAT CHANGES?

Using the same recipe and grind size, each step from the #8 to the #2 increases contact time by approximately 15–30 seconds, depending on the coffee. Longer contact time generally results in higher extraction and higher TDS, while maintaining OREA’s signature fast and efficient drainage.

DESIGNED FOR BALANCE

Every Regulator is designed with one goal in mind: Balance.

Not excessive sweetness, overwhelming clarity, exaggerated fermentation.

Simply giving you another tool to dial in coffees more precisely and consistently.
